The 2010 Winter Olympics Day 11
After over 40 years of bidding, planning, getting, building, re-vamping, sterilizing, de-drugging, widening (Highways), securing (back-country goblins), Canada and BC are now in the middle of HOSTING THE WORLD and are in the midst of one of the biggest sporting events and parties of our time and certainly of this decade. The 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver & Whistler.
What I thought two weeks ago would be the BEST WINTER OLYMPICS EVER, has turned into the Bad Karma Games or the Glitch Games to the international media outlets.
The weather, the Opening Ceremonies glitches, the luge track, the transportation, the Olympic cauldron surrounded by chain-link fences and razor-wire. A convicted Felon of a BC Premiere in Gordon Campbell. The list goes on and on.
Does Humanity not deserve to be treated better than a 2 week event? Sure the Olympics would have been great in the the 70's or 80's in BC , but now in 2010....not so sure.
The aversion to Whistler this year is relentless, when we would have been a full-house in February anyway. People have been avoiding Whistler in November, December, January, February, and I guess u get the point that people are avoiding Whistler, but hopefully coming to The World Ski & Snowboard Festival in April.
It will only cost over 4 BILLION DOLLARS to host these Games. It will be great but what, as a society could we do with 4 Billion Dollars, (1 billion dollare on Security alone in a post 9/11 World that was originally only budgeted for 250 million...oops)
What do the Olympics stand for now in the year 2010? Sport? Greatness? Achievement? No, its all about the money, prestige of winning and media rights & sponsorship opportunities. Mr. Jacques, say-it-with-a-french-accent Roggues, Mr/ King of the World and Presidential Leader of the Olympic Movement/MEGA MONEY WASTERS.
What is more important, sport or humanity?
What could the cost of these Games buy people in Haiti, Africa, Afghanistan or Iraq? A Life, an education. I can throw a pretty killer party for a paltry 4 million. What will this extravaganza be like? Cirque De Soleil on Acid, Esxtacy, Red Bull, hormones and Cocaine, with a little Valium and Alprazolam for good measure....
It is a time to celebrate our culture, our athletes, our beautiful country and what makes Canada such a special place in the world to live and co-exist.
Should the Olympics be held in the same location maybe TWICE and then move on to the next destination?? It seems that if they did that, the money spent would be halved, humantarian efforts could be greater, and the focus of the Olympics would not be the money, but the actual sport and the athletes.
