BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico

On April 20th, 2010, in the Gulf of Mexico, the Deepwater Horizon off-shore drilling oil rig owned by TransOcean and operated by British Petroleum had a catastrophic explosion, killing 11 people on-board before sinking to the Gulf floor and created what has been the WORST Environmental disaster this world has ever seen.

The amount of oil gushing into the sea is estimated at between 20 000 to 50 000 barrels A DAY since the accident occurred; incredible amounts for over 48 days now, and counting. The US government estimates between 22 to 47 million gallons of oil have now polluted the waters and with ever changing currents, the damage is gradually killing large swaths of ocean and killing MILLIONS of innocent creatures and destroying entire ecosystems.

The latest efforts to cap the oil-leak and capture the oil have been somewhat effective, but with news that the flow of oil into the water will not cease completely until AUGUST, it is extremely disheartening and one must ask now if the risks involved were ever worth the benefits. Clearly NO.

President Obama’s initial re-action and deployment of resources to deal with this tragedy has left me shaking my head as to why a "Dream Team" of industry scientists, engineers and experts where not deployed to try to find a solution to this problem within the first 24/48 hours. Asking BP to "deal with it" is shameful.

How did we get here?

In September 2009, the Deepwater Horizon rig drilled the deepest oil well in history at a vertical depth of 35,050 feet (10,683 m) and measured depth of 35,055 feet (10,685 m), which was at the time the deepest oil well in the world.

The well was more than 5,000 feet deeper than the design specification on the company's fleet list, SO THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE and this seems to be the case of an acident waiting to happen with BP even not following their own safety guidelines.

It is now time to question our dependance on oil more than ever. "Going Green" has to be more than just a fashion statement or marketing ploy. We are now wise enough and smart enough to create ZERO FOOT-PRINT TECHNOLOGY and harness the wind, sea, sun to become a truly energy efficient world.

Offshore oil drilling MUST STOP! The development and destruction of the Oil sands in Alberta MUST STOP! Our dependance on oil must stop! That is the only solution for a sustainable world.
The day for profits over people and living creatures must come to an end.
